Valentines day is approaching , some people have boos, others don’t and the number one question people ask is this: Is love a choice or just a feeling? Well, let’s find out!
What is the meaning real love?
Is true love only based on how you feel in that moment? Or do I have to keep making the choice to love? What exactly is love in the first place? Well GOD says: Love is patient, Love is kind, Love does not seek its own advantage. And yet this isn’t what we see especially among the younger generation (Gen Z). Everyone is all about me, me and instant gratification. This makes me think- maybe we aren’t ready for real love yet.
So why do we love or know even know what it is to love? Even if we might not know what true love is. Because “love” cannot be seen or touched. It is not tangible yet it is the number one thing we all seem to want. The simple answer is this;
WE LOVE BECAUSE GOD FIRST LOVED US(1 John 4:19).
Basically, because God loves YOU and I so much, we are also able to have the ability to love and receive love- even though most of the time, we might not fully receive it from our family and friends. This alone is why love isn’t a feeling but a choice, a decision.
how do we know God loves us?
Because NO ONE has GREATER LOVE than to give up His LIFE for his friends – which was what Jesus did on the cross! So we can brag about this. That we have someone who is madly in love with us. Someone who would be willing to die a THOUSAND, A MILLION, AND A BILLION times for us, If He had to. If love was just based on a feeling, He wouldn’t have done this. Why? Because feelings go has fast as they come!
But, because His love was a choice, He chose to die for us.
His Love Didn’t Just Focus On Feelings, But Was A Choice That Had To Be Made.
Unconditional LOVE is based on choice.
NO one can separate us from God’s LOVE. Not the devil , not your enemies or even YOURSELF can separate you from God’s LOVE. Why? Because His love is unconditional! Not like a girlfriend/ boyfriend that would only love you based on what you do for them or if you are good to them. e.g. if you buy them gifts on valentine’s day. Also, that “love” that goes as fast as its comes- this is usually lust or infatuation but society likes to term such short term ” feelings” love. This is why you shouldn’t compare yourself to others because what you may see, may not tell the full story- A Love that is so fickle…
what are the qualities of true love?
However, God’s love is different. It is not based on what you do for Him or how you look because lets get real- what could you actually do for God that He doesn’t have already? After all, He is the God of the Universe! His LOVE is based on who HE IS. This is because, He is love Himself- the exact personification of love.
And this is why I am thankful that God’s love isn’t based on His feelings but a choice because I am pretty sure God would have enough reason and feel enough not to love us on a daily basis!
God's LOVE is a choice not a feeling.
God loves us so much. In fact, God is my forever valentine! So don’t feel disheartened that you have no boo and it is Valentine’s day. You might be lonely but you are never alone with GOD.
All you have to do is to accept God’s love into your life; All you have to do is to make a choice to love God, regardless of any feelings.
Because God is a gentleman, It is important to realise, He is not going to force His love on you and neither is He going to force you to love Him.
Besides, Time is too short. Very soon you wouldn’t be able to accept the love of God with His death on the cross through Jesus Christ even if you wanted to. So TODAY is the day for salvation. Just sincerely tell Him. “Lord, I want to love you like you me” and just see what He does in your life!

I am very sure you would know this verse even if you are not a Christian. Let’s MAKE IT PERSONAL! Repeat it to yourself.
“For God so loved ME, That He gave His only begotten Son that I should believe in Him and not PERISH but have everlasting life.”
